Care Guide

Jowhar products are made using the finest leather, which is a living, breathing material that ages beautifully over time and develops a unique patina. As such, it is important that you care for them knowingly and responsibly. Here is what we suggest you keep in mind in order to keep your Jowhar product in good condition for a very long time:

Do Not Disinfect It with Alcohol

We understand that with COVID-19 going around, you might be tempted to disinfect your Jowhar product with alcohol. Don’t do it! Alcohol can cause discoloration of leather and even permanently damage its fiber structure. A common way to disinfect leather products without harming them is to wipe them with a very hot cloth (so hot that it can barely be held by hand).

Keep It Away from Harsh Chemicals and Colors

In addition to alcohol itself, many alcohol-based and acetone-based products like ink and perfume and oil-based products like make-up and lipstick can leave permanent marks on your leather. Repeated contact between leather and textiles with strong or raw colors (for example if the inside of your pocket where you put your wallet is very hot blue denim) can cause a phenomenon known as color migration, where your leather will absorb a little bit of that color and take on a new color that you may not like.

Keep It Away from the Elements

To make sure your Jowhar leather lives a long and healthy life, keep it away from prolonged exposure to intense heat or cold (e.g., don’t leave it to freeze by the window on a cold day or leave it on a hot radiator), direct sunlight, and air that is too humid or too dry. If water gets on your leather, wipe it down immediately with a dry cloth.

Don’t Stretch It Out of Shape

For all its famous durability and longevity, leather will eventually change shape if you push it far enough. Avoid forcefully fitting objects into your Jowhar wallets that you know aren’t meant to be in there, and don’t stuff your card holders with more cards than the recommended number. In addition to changing the shape of the leather, doing this may damage the stitching as well.

Keep It Simple When Cleaning It (and Leave It to Professionals When It’s Really Dirty)

It’s good to wipe your Jowhar leather product with a dry microfiber cloth every once in a while, so that dust and grime doesn’t add up to the point where it needs a deeper cleaning. It’s best to use very little water (or no water at all) on your cloth when wiping leather. Avoid all kinds of DIY solutions and ordinary detergents and cleaning agents when dealing with premium leather like the leather we use in Jowhar products, and go for products that are specifically designed for cleaning leather. More importantly, if you’re dealing with a serious case that needs a thorough cleaning, it’s best to just leave it in professional care and take it to the dry-cleaners.

Use That Beautiful Box

It’s a good idea to give your Jowhar product a break every once in a while, and when you do that, it’s best to put it back in that pretty packaging it originally came in. That packaging will keep dust and residue out and maintain a mild temperature and humidity level that will give your Jowhar product a good rest.
